Diffun, Quirino – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 02 Regional Director Dr. Virginia G. Bilgera visited Quirino State University (QSU) led by Dr. Hermenegildo F. Samoy, Jr. in preparation for the launching of Smart and Sustainable Agricultural Projects today, February 17, 2023.

With the commitment of the Quirino Province Governor, Hon. Dakila Cua, in their journey towards establishing a Smarter and Sustainable Community, DOST 02 and QSU agreed to come up with a Roadmap and look for possible STI interventions that will fit and help the province.

The collaborative project will use data science and analytics to create a data-driven report that will serve as the basis for decision making in the community.

Moreover, the project involves the integration of science-based agriculture profiles through data science and analytics and the customization of the agriculture database system.

The data dashboard will also provide a visual representation of agricultural crop production areas in order to facilitate effective response, efficient preparedness, and faster recovery in agricultural sectors such as crops, livestock, and fisheries/aquaculture.

This will also further capacitate the Provincial Local Government Unit (PLGU) through its Agriculture Office on the usage of SAFE Quirino for flood risk assessment of agricultural crop production.

Dr. Bilgera mentioned the importance of the project implementation and its ultimate contribution in increasing the resilience of rural livelihoods to climate-related hazards and disasters.

The said project is set to launch on February 23, 2023. The said activity will also be attended by DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang and other dignitaries.

Present in the project visit were PSTO Quirino Provincial Director Engr. Rocela Angelica Gorospe together with Supply Officer Sonia Mamauag, Science Research Specialist Daisy Simon, Project Technical Specialist Raquel Santos, Project Technical Assistant Dave Masirag, among others.
