August 26, 2025 – A new book aimed at revitalizing aging coffee plantations and promoting sustainable agriculture in the country has officially been launched. It offers a science-based blueprint for transforming the province’s coffee industry.

Authored by faculty from the Forestry Department of the University and supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through its Grants-in-Aid Program, the book captures years of research and community collaboration with the Mataga-ay Coffee Growers and Producers Cooperative (MCGPC).

The publication addresses the urgent challenges faced by coffee farmers in Quirino province, particularly the declining productivity of old coffee trees. By introducing innovative rejuvenation technologies—including coppicing and macropropagation—the project presents scalable, practical solutions grounded in both tradition and scientific advancement.

“This book is the culmination of a vision rooted in the desire to uplift our coffee farming communities, restore the productivity of aging plantations, and promote sustainable agricultural practices through science-based innovation,” Dr. Carig shared.

The completion of the book is a proof to the collaborative spirit that brought it to life. It highlights the resilience of MCGPC, the dedication of the research and technical teams, and the ongoing support from government and institutional stakeholders.

As a compilation of methods, data, and community experiences, the book is positioned to serve as a crucial reference for researchers, practitioners, students, policymakers, and farmers alike.

“May this publication serve as a guide, a reference, and a source of inspiration… and may it prove that local solutions can indeed make a national impact”, Dr. Carig added.
