The Provincial Government of Quirino (PGQ), through the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), partnered with Quirino State University for the conduct of Zero Waste Month Information Education and Communication (IEC) Campaign, on January 27 at the Amphitheater of Diffun Campus.
The event convened student leaders from the QSU Student Government, student publications, and various colleges and organizational student councils.
With the aim of promoting environmental awareness and responsibility, the event started with a welcome message from Dr. Hermenegildo F. Samoy, Jr., University President, through Dr. Fredisminda M. Dolojan, Director for Extension Services and Community Engagement (ESCE). The President encouraged the students to actively support school waste management initiatives, adopt innovative strategies for environmental sustainability, and work together to implement the rules and regulations of the zero-waste campaign. He urged the participants to be proactive ,saying, โShare your experiences, ideas, and suggestions; let us work together to create and build a sustainable environment.โ
After the welcome address, the campaign included informative lectures. Gywndelle Alawadin, a technical staff member, spoke on “Zero Waste Management: The Three R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle),” emphasizing practical applications and the significance of reducing waste generation.
For a deeper understanding of waste management, For. Leonardo B. Odon, Senior Environmental Management Specialist from the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of PENRO, delivered a presentation covering various topics. These included the identification and impacts of chemicals and hazardous waste, revised procedures and standards outlined in DAO 2023-22, processes and regulations related to hazardous waste exportation and disposal, and health and environmental concerns associated with toxic chemicals in products.
The information campaign concluded with an open forum and photo-taking session. It served as an avenue for fostering awareness, responsibility, and active participation among student leaders and organizations in achieving a zero-waste environment.
