Students continue to play a proactive role in the environment preservation efforts of Quirino State University. As an initiative this semester, Forestry students have started enrichment planting using coffee wildlings at the Agroforestry Demonstration Site in Diffun Campus.
Following the successful tree-planting activity last August 2, 2024 by faculty and staff using cloned coffee water sprouts, students were introduced to the use of coffee seeds that grew into young plants (wildlings) as recommended by researchers from the university’s “Smarter and Sustainable Coffee Production through Clonal Propagation and Rejuvenation Technology” project.
Under the guidance of their subject advisers, Foresters Gerlyn B. Orpiano and Jonalyn J. Quinan, third and fourth-year Forestry students have planted 100 coffee wildlings, providing a total of 200 newly-planted Robusta coffee in the campus. As hands-on learning experience, these students will adopt and care for their planted trees until graduation.
With increasing student participation in educational and eco preservation activities, more trees are seen to thrive on university grounds as the semester progresses. This contributes to a healthier and more sustainable campus environment. I QIO with President Hermenegildo F. Samoy, Jr., PhD
